When AQUATOTS became a franchise in 2003, René and Shaun became the proud owners of AQUATOTS Port Elizabeth.
René, a qualified and experienced Junior Primary Teacher and Educare Lecturer, launched AQUATOTS in Port Elizabeth in 1998. She says that when she first came across AQUATOTS she felt as if it had been designed specifically with her in mind, her first loves being children, swimming and music. After twenty-one years of teaching swimming in various pools, René had good reason to be celebrating the completion of the couple’s own pool in which they house AQUATOTS franchise.
René’s swim teaching career dates back to her student days. Later, as Junior Primary Teacher she headed school swimming and was co-opted onto the Eastern Province Swimming Committee. By the time she settled in Port Elizabeth with her husband, she had already set up a swim school in Plettenberg Bay and later one in East London.
On qualifying as an AQUATOTS instructor, René immediately tried out her freshly acquired knowledge on her baby son, Bryce, and had him swimming before his second birthday. Two years later, there could be nothing more reaffirming of René’s teaching skill than the swimming ability of her baby daughter, Kyra. But, says René, the credit goes to Shaun as well.
Shaun, himself an experienced schoolteacher, was the accompanying parent for both Bryce and Kyra when mother Rene was the instructor. So inspired by AQUATOTS was Shaun, that he too decided to qualify as an AQUATOTS instructor. AQUATOTS is a great activity for fathers and it cannot get much better for them than to have a father for an instructor.
