Lis’s Swim School, in the heart of Johannesburg Northern Suburbs, has served as a registered AQUATOTS centre since 1993. Established in 1974 for summer teaching, it has become the largest all season swim teaching facility in the area. Its two enclosed pools set in a lush garden are inviting to even the most anxious of young learners. At peak season over 300 learn-to-swim and squad-aged pupils use the 6 x 14 metre pool, while the smaller 5.5 x 5.5 metre pool, with its unique ambience, has more than 250 infants master swimming ability the AQUATOTS way.The swim school also offers aqua aerobics and swim lessons for adults.
Lis, herself once an Olympic team swimmer, is well equipped to include style correction and squad training in her swim teaching curriculum. This, together with her remedial teaching qualification, reflects her as a patient and dedicated teacher who strives to keep abreast of developments in her field. Ask her why she is an AQUATOTS franchise owner and she will tell you that it is because of the ongoing training and support she receives as a franchisee.
Lis leaves the running of her swim school to her long-time secretary, Jane Williams, who supervises the band of well-trained personnel that include Lis’s son Andrew who is a student and SA national swimmer. Leigh Johnston and Jean de Graeve, both AQUATOTS instructors, came to her as in-house trainee Swimming South Africa Learn-to-Swim instructors in 1995 and 1998 respectively. Two part-time instructors join in at peak season. The message of Lis’s swim school is: ‘WE WELCOME ALL BIG AND SMALL.’
